Rat Extermination – Avoiding Infestation

If you have rats, you will need to consider rat extermination. Tackling this problem as soon as possible is important because the last thing you want is a serious infestation. Rats are dirty and destructive, plus they carry disease and could be a grave threat to your family. You won’t want to waste time in ridding your home of these pests; fortunately there are a few ways that you can get rid of them, though it will take some effort. Due to the fact that rats breed so quickly, it doesn’t take long to end up with a rat infestation.

The most common rat infestations are from the species known as the Norway rat, which are brown, but there is also another rat that is a pest; these black rats are called Roof Rats. Although rats are commonly associated with cities, they will go wherever they can find food and shelter. Not only do rats carry disease, but they will also contaminate your food, and they will bite under the right circumstances.

Using Poison for Rat Extermination

One of the most common methods of killing rats is with poison, which is fine though there are a few things that you should consider. If you use poison there is a good chance that the rats will get into your wall and die there, and this could lead to having several decaying rats in your walls that you cannot get rid of without tearing down the wall. The odor will be terrible.

In addition to these problems, using poison can be dangerous if you have pets or small children.

How Are the Rats Getting In?

If you want to control your rat problem the first thing you need to do is find out how the rats are getting into your home. In order to find their method of entry you will need to do a complete examination of your house, from the attic all the way down to the basement.  Once you find out how the rats are getting in you will need to seal off this entryway. When you have sealed off all entry points, not only does this keep rats from getting in, but it will also trap the rats that are already in your home so that you can perform rat extermination.

Rat Traps for Rat Extermination

Most professionals believe that the best way to eliminate rats permanently from a home is to use traps. These are safer than poison and do not leave open the possibility that a pet or child will be accidentally poisoned. You will want to set the traps in the areas where you have rats; you will be able to find these areas by simply looking for rat droppings.

Prevent Rat Infestation

Along with rat extermination you will want to prevent another infestation by taking a few precautions. Always keep weeds trimmed down and try to avoid building decks and sheds that have space beneath them, if possible. When cooking and eating outside, cleanup the area when you are finished and don’t let cooking grease accumulate beneath your grill.

Seal off all areas around your home where rats can get in and inspect these areas on a regular basis. Remember, rats can chew through just about anything so just because it is sealed off now, doesn’t mean that they won’t find their way in later.

Keep your home clean and free of debris and food messes; this will attract rodents of all types. The best way to control rats is to prevent them so that you will not have a problem later and have to turn to rat extermination.
